GCC vs Hare St & Hormead: TK reports

The season’s first match was a home win but nowhere near as easy as the scorebook might suggest. The visitors batted first on a fine afternoon and an even better track with one opener suggesting it was the best he’d batted on for some time. Their horribly young Caine brothers (54 & 39 n.o.) provided the bulk of their 173 all out but they were hoping for more until their last five scored only six runs between them. The home bowling highlights were Martin Baker’s very, very slow and timely left arm round producing 2 for 26 from his 7 overs and Jamie Menzies 3 for 23.

Tea, as ever, took far too long but no-one was bothered. Dan Farman’s opening 38 was an excellent knock in the face of accurate, swift bowling that had the home side troubled at 69 for 5. However, the visitors ran out of quality bowlers and AP Stafford (83 n.o.) and Don Syme (24 n.o.) saw off the last of the quicks before helping themselves in an unbeaten stand of 110 to win the game.

This was a good start to the season against visitors who, even their league cricketing youngsters, play the game in the right spirit. They’ll be keen to win at theirs later in the season. Let’s see…
