End of Season Report

Played 9.  Won 6.  Lost 3.

It’s not often we are accused of playing too hard but we were this season! I won’t reveal which team made this scurrilous accusation but it does reflect our improved playing standards. Could it be the winter nets, improved fitness standards or our lovely scorers new found ability to count? Who knows. However, we are improving and an impressive victory against the gentleman of Dullingham in our last game of the season confirmed it. In my view this was our best performance yet with sound batting and an impressively tight bowling display from Neil Woods and Tony Kennedy taking the plaudits, though we mustn’t forget Kevin Roos chipping in with three timely wickets to keep up the pressure.

Off the field a lot has happened. We started the season with the President’s BBQ, generously sponsored by Justin Fairhall and Flair Catering. The food was superb and the event greatly enjoyed by all. Significantly, it raised £720 for club funds and gave us the impetus to have more fund raising events. Generous donations from two villagers provided the funds to go ahead with the professional laying of a cricket square in the Springfield Lane meadow. This was done on the 16th September only to be followed by an unseasonally dry spell. Hurried Heath Robinson style attempts at irrigation quickly improved and a concerted effort by many members ensured that the seed germinated. At the time of writing, it has had its second cut and is looking fantastic with a thick lush sward of grass. It will almost be a shame to play cricket on it. Good grief, are these the first symptoms of Groundsman’s disease?

All efforts now are aimed towards raising funds to purchase the equipment necessary to create and maintain an excellent playing surface. Having been donated 2 grass cutters the man item needed is a decent roller. An excellent family firm in Essex has been sourced that specialize in reconditioned rollers for cricket pitches and we are only a few pounds short of being able to make a purchase. Forthcoming events such as the Sponsored run on the 10th December and the possible awarding of grants should see us home and dry.

I mustn’t sign off without mentioning the Cocktails, Canapés and Quiz night held at HQ earlier in the month. 75 people competed in the quiz and gorged themselves on cocktails, superbly created and sponsored by the Blue Ball and the Vaults, and the canapés generously provided by Flair Catering. It was a triumph of ingenuity in that the quiz was spread between the Pub, inside and outside, and two neighbouring houses. It was a spectacular Blue Ball night greatly enjoyed by all. Importantly, substantial funds were also raised for the club.

All in all, it has been a very enjoyable and successful season both on and off the field. Next season we will be playing on our own pitch in the beautiful Grantchester Meadows. I for one can’t wait.  My thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen.
